After climbing exactly 1,480 steps, you reach the summit of Mount Cetatea at 850 meters (2,800 feet). This is the true historical fortress expanded by Vlad III in the mid-1400s.

A major EU-funded restoration concluded in April 2025, reopening the site to visitors. The mountaintop ruins are highly exposed, so you should expect breezy conditions even in summer.

The Northern Tower

15 mins

This is the best-preserved main keep of the castle. Vlad the Impaler used these thick structures as his last line of defense during sieges. The original defensive walls here measure between 2 and 3 meters thick. Notice the emplecton construction technique, which blends rough stone with earth and lime.

The Southern Walls

10 minsFragile ruins

These crumbling foundations mark the former residential section of the citadel. A devastating landslide in 1888 sent a large portion of this castle area crashing into the Argeș River. Do not lean over the edges. The drop to the river below is severe and dangerous.

The Observation Deck

15 minsWide-angle lens

Various vantage points around the ruins offer panoramic views of the Făgăraș Mountains and the gorge. The high elevation provides a clear line of sight over the Argeș River valley. The views are best in the morning when the light hits the valley below. Bring a wide-angle lens to capture the landscape.
