Reaching Poenari Citadel requires a steep climb up exactly 1,480 concrete steps. The hike takes 30 to 45 minutes and winds through a dense Carpathian forest.
The climb is physically demanding. You gain significant elevation to reach the ruins at 850 meters (2,800 feet). Start your hike at the base near the Transfăgărășan Highway. Stick to the marked staircase to avoid wild brown bears in the surrounding rugged forest.
Carry at least 1.5 liters of bottled water per person. There are no facilities at the top. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring a small daypack so your hands stay free for the final approach.

30-45 minsSteep climb
A steep, winding concrete staircase takes you up through a dense, shaded forest. These steps were constructed during the Communist era. The ascent requires good physical fitness. Pace yourself and use the occasional wooden benches to catch your breath.

5 minsUse handrails
The final approach to the citadel gates crosses a narrow walkway. You will see steep drops on either side of the path. Crosswinds here can be surprisingly strong. Keep your hands completely free to hold the metal railings securely.
